Dr. Masuma Akter is currently serving as a postdoctoral research associate in the Cumming School of Medicine, Department of Pediatrics, at the University of Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Previously, she was affiliated with the Bloorview Research Institute at Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital, which is associated with the University of Toronto, in Toronto. Additionally, Dr. Akter holds a professorship in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Dhaka University of Engineering and Technology, Bangladesh. Her research primarily focuses on developing machine learning and deep learning algorithms utilizing biomedical data (such as MRI, EEG, CT, X-ray, and thermal imaging) to characterize brain functionalities. She also works on access technology for children with disabilities using brain-computer interfaces for augmentative and alternative communication (BCI-AAC). Dr. Akter earned her Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the School of Engineering & Information Technology at the University of New South Wales, Australia. Her doctoral research involved the development of a 3D CT to 2D single-plane fluoroscopy image registration algorithm for the kinematic analysis of in-vivo knee joints. She obtained her M.Eng.Sc degree in Electrical Engineering from Multimedia University, Malaysia, where she developed a hardware prototype for an image compression algorithm intended for mobile communication.
